EDUCATION
Imagine a better future
"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,to preaching and to teaching” (1 Timothy 4:12-13)
Hope on a Thousand Hills partners with the local communities to empower church leaders, supplement funding to build new school buildings, train teachers and cultivate learning in the next generation. Research shows that the foundation of a brain’s pathways are established by six years of age. Children who complete pre-school are more likely to complete higher education and be successful contributors to society. Despite this 75% of pre-school aged children in Rwanda are not enrolled in school.
In the last few years HTH in partnership with local communities have built 13 schools with plans and vision to grow this number in the future. There are over 1000 kids receiving their protein nutrition and preschool education though this program. (Click HERE to learn more about our nutrition program for these pre-school children)
Buildings
One school costs roughly $35,000 to build, an impossible amount for families making less than $2 per day. Many of our schools begin in Rwandan Anglican Church buildings but many of the structures are not adequate for the pre-school program. Building schools in juncture to our churches is ideal and will enhance community life and pre-school education.
Curriculum
The Director of Education Rene’ Hirwa worked for Teach Rwanda and has an educational background in Public Relations and Early Childhood Education. Through his expertise, a Play Based Learning curriculum is being developed to unify and support our teachers. The foundational goal is children that graduate from our pre-school program are:
Children Who Think Critically and Analytically
Children that Problem Solve
Children Who Know How to Lead
Children Who can Apply Skills
Children Who Know and Love Jesus
“I love kids so much. I love to see them learning and growing while having fun! I want to help our kids explore new things. HTH wants to set a foundation that will help them with the rest of their life. I want to see better generation.” -Rene’ Hirwa
Families
Many of our families are living in rural poverty. Raising up the next generation through this pre-school program has the capacity to change the trajectory of these families lives forever. Teachers’ salaries are one part stipend by the Anglican church the school is directly tied to and families are encouraged to pay 500 RwF a month to supplement the teachers’ salaries. By contributing to their children’s school fees, families are not made to be passive recipients of aid. Instead, parents are actively engaged in determining the direction of their children’s futures.
