Kangondo Slum Ministry

In early 2016, Hope on a Thousand Hills began doing ministry in Kangondo, a poor neighborhood just down the hill from Kibagabaga Anglican Church. This branch of our evangelism ministry works in partnership with Word Made Flesh—an organization that serves Jesus among the most vulnerable in urban centers around the world. Through Clement and Marie Immaculee, a lay couple in the local community, and Shelbye and Annie, our friends from Word Made Flesh, we began building relationships in this community. We have 18 women currently participating in our ministry in Kangondo. All of these women are wives and mothers who are trying to support their families by selling fruit, vegetables, or second-hand clothes on the streets. These tiny businesses are not enough to meet the needs of these families, and most struggle to afford health insurance and school fees. For the last six months, we have helped these women create a savings and credit group, through which they are able to save about 40 cents to $1 per week, depending on their capacity. We have also used this space to have a weekly bible study and monthly trainings on domestic violence, nutrition, and maternal health. This year, we have also conducted an entrepreneurship training (in partnership with DuHope) to help these women build more creative and sustainable business ideas. Through this, we hope to enable these women to build better businesses and be able to sustainably provide for their families. Our gifts of hope for this year focus on start-up costs for a produce market that women from our savings group in Kangondo have been working together to create. We also want to ensure that each of these women are able to send their children to school, and are offering scholarships which you can help us fund.
